Revealed: The street fashion hotspots of the US
Whether you prefer to work a chic and sophisticated all-black outfit, or love experimenting with colors, textures and layers; the way we dress says so much about us. After all, nothing else enables us to express ourselves quite like fashion does!
With that in mind, we wanted to discover the street fashion hotspots of the US, to see where the chicest people showcase their styles, as well as the best places to indulge in some serious retail therapy!
So, it’s time to see if your city makes the list…
1. New York City, New York (646,000 engagements)
It comes as no surprise that topping our list of street fashion hotspots is the fashion capital of the world! Whatever fashion you’re looking for, you’ll find it – and more – from the chic and sophistication of Manhattan, to the quirky and eclecticism of Brooklyn.
For high street and high-end brands, Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue are both great places to start, alongside the iconic flagship stores of Saks and Bergdorfs.
For independent boutiques and vintage finds, head over to SoHo (where you’ll find Mystique Boutique and What Goes Around Comes Around for luxury vintage fashion), NoLita for its chic clothing boutiques; or Williamsburg for eclectic finds.
2. Chicago, Illinois (78,100 engagements)
With an impressive 78,100 engagements, Chicago comes in second place, with its shopping credentials firmly cementing its position as a fashion hotspot. Whilst Michigan Avenue is the prime spot for high street brands, there are so many alternatives where you can indulge in some retail therapy!
For cute boutiques, Armitage Avenue in Lincoln Park has got you covered; whereas Belmont Avenue is the place to be for thrift stores. But it’s not just the city center that has lots of shopping opportunities – Wicker Park’s hipster vibe means it’s got some great indie shops that you can spend a whole day trawling around.
3. San Francisco, California (25,000 engagements)
Not only is San Francisco known for its culture and foodie scene, but it’s also a fashion hotspot! For luxury brands and boutiques, Union Square is the place to be; with the nearby Westfield Center home to more then 200 high street brands.
For vintage finds, Haight Street and Ashbury Street have so many stores, including Relic Vintage and Wasteland. Alternatively, for independent boutiques, there’s no better place than the Noe Valley neighbourhood, where you won’t just find clothing, but gifts and food stores too.
4. Nashville, Tennessee (18,800 engagements)
Located in the deep south, Nashville’s fashion is heavily influenced by its involvement in country and blues music, making it a great place to discover some one-of-a-kind pieces!
You could spend a whole day thrift store shopping here, with Hip Zipper Vintage, Star Struck Vintage, and Savant Vintage all must-see shops to wander around; alongside the Nashville Flea Market, which opens its doors once a month.
Alternatively, for independent boutiques, then 12th Avenue South should be on your radar, as should Fatherland Street, and Downtown Franklin.
5. New Orleans, Louisiana (16,200 engagements)
Rounding off the top 5 is another iconic deep south city: New Orleans! If you can tear yourself away from the bars of Bourbon and Frenchmen Street, you’ll soon see this eclectic city is a shopper’s paradise.
Whilst Decatur Street in the French Quarter has classic high street brands on offer, there are lots of unique fashion stores, in addition to the French Market flea market, which spans a whole six blocks!
For more vintage finds, Oak Street in Riverbend is a great hotspot; and Magazine Street in the Garden District has tons of boutiques and galleries that are just waiting to be discovered.
6. Portland, Oregon (14,300 engagements)
The first thing that springs to mind when you think of Portland is likely the “Keep Portland Weird” sign, which really does sum up the city… its variety of thrift stores and clothing shops makes it a great shopping destination if you’re looking for something eclectic!
If you want high street brands, then stick to the Downtown area. But, if you’re looking for vintage stores, they shouldn’t be hard to find (Portland has over 50!). Head to Hollywood Vintage, House of Vintage or Village Merchant to name a few – or, for quirky jewellery pieces, check out Gem Set Love.
7. Richmond, Virginia (10,600 engagements)
With 10,600 engagements on Instagram, Richmond places a respectable 7th place as a fashion hotspot of the US. Out of town malls like Chesterfield Town Center and Short Pump Town Center have got you covered with high street and high-end labels.
For something more unique, Carytown has an abundance of independent boutiques; or for a day of thrift store shopping, check out Fan Tastic, Circle Thrift & Art Space, and The Clothes Rack.
8. Downey, California (8,920 engagements)
Located to the southeast of LA, Downey might not spring to mind when you think of street fashion spots, but it should do!
The Stonewood Center has all the high street brands you could need, whereas if it’s vintage stores you’re after, make sure you head to Mas Vintage, The Vintage Club, and Research Vintage, all of which have lots of great finds just waiting to be discovered.
9. Brooklyn, New York (7,860 engagements)
Whilst New York City placed number one, Brooklyn as a suburb has placed 9th on the list, and with its quirky, hipster vibes, it’s not hard to see why!
Part of Brooklyn’s charm is exploring its many neighbourhoods, which you’ll get to do lots of when shopping there. For vintage finds, Brooklyn Flea Market is a go-to, as is Williamsburg, which is home to Super Real Much, Beacon’s Closet, and Chickee’s Vintage.
Alternatively, for independent boutiques, there’s no better place to head to than Court Streets in Carroll Gardens, and Fifth Avenue in Park Slope.
10. Washington D.C. (6,330 engagements)
Rounding off our top 10 is Washington D.C., with 6,330 engagements. It might be most well-known for being home to the president, but it turns out it has a pretty thriving fashion scene too!
For independent boutiques, 14th Street in Georgetown is a must-see. In fact, the area of Georgetown as a whole is great for shopping, with its variety of indie shops, high-end boutiques, and international brands.
Alternatively, if you’re looking for vintage shopping, then there are a few stores to choose from, including Ella-Rue, Meeps, and Fia’s Fabulous Finds.
So, whether you’re a lover of luxury labels, or exclusively dress in vintage pieces, hopefully this should give you some serious inspiration when looking for the next piece to add to your wardrobe.
